How to Recover Deleted Files

Have you accidentally deleted your files from the Hard disk? Do you desperately want to recover them back? Well you need not panic! It is possible to recover the deleted files back from the hard disk  (even after you have Shift+Deleted)  provided you act as soon as you realize that the files are deleted and use the best deleted files recovery software. In this post you will find a detailed information on how to recover the deleted files from your Windows PC or Mac.
Today there exists hundreds of data recovery tools and softwares on the market which boast to recover 100% of all the deleted files back in the original condition. But in reality most of these softwares are neither effective nor capable of recovering your files back. So it is very much necessary to make the right choice of the file recovery software in order to recover deleted files back in the original condition. We recommend the following softwares to recover the deleted files

1. Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery (for Windows)
2. Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery (for Mac)

Stellar Phoenix is one of the best company specializing in deleted files recovery services and solutions since 1993. Stellar’s Data Recovery Solutions encompasses a wide range of software for almost any data loss situation ranging from accidental formats to virus attacks to software malfunctions. Hence Stellar provides the best tools to recover deleted files with over 1,000,000 satisfied customers across 137 countries.

How the File Deletion Process Works?

When you delete a file from your computer (or even from the recycle bin) the file is not actually deleted. Unlike what most people think, the file is not permanantly deleted or dropped from your hard disk. Let’s take an example of a book containing 50 pages. Suppose when you delete the page 25, assume that only the entry in the index which points to the page 25 is deleted and not actually the page 25 itself. Likewise when you delete a file from your hard disk, only the pointer which points to this file is removed and not actually the file itself. This file still exists intact and is 100% possible to recover it back in the original condition. In this condition the file becomes invisible and hence appears to have deleted.

What are the Chances of Recovering my Files Back?

Since the operating system doesn’t immediately re-use the space from the deleted files, it is most certainly possible to recover the deleted files back in 100% original condition. It may take up a very long time for those files to be completely deleted since the modern hard disks have ample capacity. Hence the chances are too less that the space from the deleted files are re-used immediately. So, it is really worth to try out the file recovery softwares like Stellar Data Recovery for Windows or Stellar Data Recover for Mac. Some files are reported to have recovered even after years of it’s deletion. However for the best results, it is recommended that you use the file recovery software as immediately as possible to recover your files.

Recovering the Deleted Files

In order to recover the deleted files all you need to do is perform a scan (search) for the deleted files using a File Recovery Software. Please be informed that there is no manual way to recover the deleted files. The Phoenix Data Recovery software performs a thorough scanning of the hard disk sector by sector and will locate the existence of deleted files to restore them back in the original condition. It is the only software that supports 185 popular file types including Windows NT Registry, JPEG, MP4, GIF, BMP and MS Word files. The software offers rich graphical support and incorporates advanced scanning methods to completely scan and recover deleted files from your hard drive. With this you can
  • Recover FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS, and NTFS5 file system partitions
  • Recover deleted emails
  • Recover deleted documents
  • Recover deleted photos
  • Recover deleted music
  • Formatted Hard-Drive recovery
  • Recover files from USB Drives, CDs, DVDs and memory cards
  • Recover almost all the camera format files

Your Grandma’s Radio is on YouTube

YouTube users are doing all sorts of creative things with annotations, a feature that lets them easily add interactivity to their videos.

In the past, they have created video games, a working piano and now you have an antique-style radio that has knobs to switch radio stations just like the real thing.

For best results, hit play followed by pause to let the whole video buffer locally. You can then use your keyboard keys or the channel buttons on the radio video itself to change frequencies.

It’s a clever implementation – all the music is part of the same video clip and, upon clicking the station buttons, you are merely jumping to a different location in the video.

Temporarily Block Time-Wasting Websites to Improve your Productivity

do no disturb signYou have certain important tasks to complete in the next hour or so and yet you have trouble staying focused for long because of all these online distractions coming through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other websites.
It maybe slightly unfair to categorize some of these sites as “time wasting” but at the same time, the endless stream of new content available on these sites can consume lot of your precious time before you even realize it.
LetMeWork – A Toggle Switch for the Time-Wasting Web
If you have trouble exercising self-discipline and can’t seem to stop yourself from constantly checking your social sites and email accounts for new updates, here’s an easy solution.
Download and unzip the file – LetMeWork.zip – to your desktop and double-click it to instantly block some of the distracting sites on your computer. When you are done with your work, double-click the same file again to unblock access to all the sites as before.
[*] You may see a User Access Control warning dialog in Windows Vista or 7 – just say yes.
How the script blocks and unblocks websites
The standard way for blocking any site on your computer is through the HOSTS file that’s available in the Windows directory.
It does take some effort to edit the HOSTS file and what the above script (source code) does is hide all the complexity from the user and lets you block as well as unblock sites with a click.
The list is customizable. You may open the vbs file in notepad and edit the WebsitesToBlock array to include any other website(s) in the banned list.
WebsitesToBlock=Array("twitter.com", "www.youtube.com", "facebook.com")
There are some browser extensions that seem to solve the same problem but this script is run-once, use-everywhere. You execute it from the desktop and it will block /unblock access to select sites across all browsers.

The Benefits of Using Facebook Groups

facebook groupsYou are probably connected with multiple sets of people on Facebook that have little in common. For instance, you are friends with your work colleagues, college mates, family members and so on. What you share on Facebook, like a picture or a video, may be interesting to one set of contacts but the other set may just see it as pure noise.
To deal with this problem, Facebook has long had a feature called lists that let you limit the visibility of your status updates to select contacts but the feature never really took off. Now Facebook has come up with an even better solution in the form of Facebook Groups.
With Facebook Groups, you can form multiple smaller networks of people inside Facebook and what you share with one group stays in that group. That means if you share your kids pictures among the “family” group, they won’t show up in your colleagues’ news feed.
Other than private messaging, Groups give you access to some new communication tools in Facebook that were not available available before. Some examples:
1. Interact without logging into Facebook
facebook email address
When you create a group in Facebook, you have the option to assign a unique email address to that group. (Go to Edit Group –> Choose a Group Email Address)
This is so interesting because you now can interact with your Facebook friends using your email client itself without having to log into Facebook.com. If someone posts a picture or a message on the Facebook group, you get an email notification and you can add a comment to that post by simply replying to that email message.
2. Group Chat Many:Many
The regular chat in Facebook is 1:1 but with Groups, all the members of that group can talk to each other simultaneously. For the first time, you can get to chat with people on Facebook who are not your friends but are part of the same group.
3. Wiki meets Facebook
wiki facebook
Facebook Groups have a wiki-like feature called “Docs” that group members can use to create text documents with Facebook itself.
These document can be edited by any other group member and Facebook stores a log of every single edit that’s made to the document just like a regular wiki.
4. Send Bulk Email
Let’s say you have a party at home and you want to send an invite to all your Facebook friends. The problem is that Facebook won’t let you send a message to more than 20 friends at a time.
As a workaround, you can create a temporary “secret” group with all your Facebook friends and anything that you now post in this group will be sent to their inboxes as well. As far as I know, there are no limits on the maximum number of people who can be part of your Facebook group.

Download the Missing Pieces of Data from Facebook

Facebook has added a new download button in your account that will help you move all your data out of Facebook as a zip file. It will have all your photos, videos, messages, and everything else that you may have ever uploaded to Facebook.

The process, as captured in the following video, is extremely simple. Just go to your Account Settings page and click the “Download Your Information” link.

How to download the “missing pieces”

If you have been staying away from Facebook all this while because it was a one-way street, now is a good time to reconsider that decision because the data lock-in problem has been solved.

There are however some things that you won’t find in the zip file. These include:

1. Your photos uploaded by other people

Facebook lets you download stuff that you have uploaded but if there are pictures of you on Facebook that were uploaded by your friends, they won’t be available in the zip.

In that case, you should use Fotobounce, an excellent app that can download all the photos where you were tagged with a click. Fotobounce is available on both Mac and Windows.

2. Facebook Phonebook

Facebook provides a neatly formatted phonebook with contact numbers all your friends who have shared them on Facebook. You will miss this data in the exported zip but there’s a workaround – click this link and save the page as a text file.

Later, you can import this file into Excel or Google Docs, strip the unnecessary text and you again have a nice list of names alongwith phone numbers.

3. Email Addresses of Friends

This I think is another important piece that you’ll miss in the exported data – email addresses of your existing Facebook contacts. If you move to another social site, how do you invite your existing network to the new place when you don’t have their email addresses.

Facebook doesn’t offer a way for you to export contacts but you can use this trick to get all the email addresses out of Facebook without breaking any rules. Connect your Facebook account with your Yahoo! Address Book and you’ll get the data you are looking for.

‘Speak’ Foreign Languages with Google Translate

google translate with speech
You use the free Google Translate service to instantly translate text from one language to another and in some language pairs, you may even listen to the translated text by clicking the blue speaker icon as show in the the above screenshot.
In theory, such a feature may come handy in situations when the person on the other side of the phone doesn’t understand your language. You can type the text in your native language, hit translate and play the translated text as audio (example) over the phone.
But will this thing really work?
As part of Demo Slam, these two girls decided to call an Indian restaurant and placed the entire order in Hindi using the “text to speech” feature of Google Translate.
They typed their responses in English in the Google Translate box and played the translated Hindi version to the order taker. After some waiting, the ordered food was at their doorstep.

A Useful Alternative to Windows Defragmenter

defrag
While your Windows already has a built-in disk defragmenter, you should also check-out a worthy alternative called Defraggler that just hit version 2. Defraggler sports a more appealing and informative UI and does some unique things as well.
The Microsoft tool that ships with Windows defrags the entire drive and the user rarely has a clue on what’s happening behind the scenes. Defraggler gives you control – you can just defrag the most fragmented files and folders without doing the entire drive. For instance, files like the Outlook PSTs become fragmented often and with Defraggler, you can target them directly for defragmentation.
Defraggler offers another unique feature where you can move all the large files that you don’t use often, like videos, program installers, etc., to the end of the hard drive. The logic is that Windows will then be able to access the frequently used smaller files faster as they’re at the start of the drive.
Contig is another utility from Sysinternals that offers similar features but it runs only from the command line.
note.. windows Defragment is totally free of cost although this application may charge to some users...

Listen to a Song on YouTube, without all the hassles

Let’s say you are working on something (like a Word document) and would also like to play one of your favorite songs in the background. You don’t have that song in your local iTunes library but it’s most definitely available on YouTube.
So how do you play that song on your desktop?
youtube music player
One option is that you launch your web browser, open the site YouTube.com, type the title of the song in the search box and then click on one of the search results to play that song.
The other hassle-free alternative that you may find more handy is Quisple.
Quisple is a compact Windows utility that lets you play music from YouTube directly on your desktop without even having to launch the browser. Just type the song name in the Quisple player and it will instantly stream the corresponding song from YouTube.
Internally, Quisple uses the Google APIs to search for that song on YouTube and automatically plays the first search result.  It doesn’t convert the YouTube video to an audio file but only hides the video portion during playback.
Pavel Kounitsky, the developer of Quisple, says that a new version should be available soon. I really like the simplicity of this app though I wish there were an option to play songs in a loop as well as support for video playlists.

Watch Videos on your PC without any Interruption

Video on Computer
When watching web videos or DVD movies on your computer, your video playback may be interrupted in many different ways.
For instance, the screen saver can activate itself or the computer screen may enter sleep mode if you don’t touch the mouse or the keyboard for a long period (because you are busy watching the video). Sometimes, pop-up notifications from IMs and other programs, that are running in the background, can also interrupt playback.
You can easily turn-off these distractions through Windows Settings but the problem with this approach is that the changes will stay even when you are done watching the video. To give you an example, if you disable the screensaver before hitting play, it will stay in the disabled state forever unless you re-enable it manually.
Therefore, instead of fiddling with your existing configuration, you may consider using utilities that will also disable all these distracting elements, but only temporarily.
Some media players are start enough and will automatically turn off the screen saver during video playback. If you are using VLC, go to Video settings and check the option that says “Disable screensaver.” In Windows Media Player, go to Player options and uncheck the box that says “Allow screen saver during playback.”
If your media player doesn’t have such a feature, you can use this excellent utility called Mouse Jiggler to prevent the screensaver from becoming active. It moves the mouse pointer back and forth periodically so Windows will never go into an idle state and therefore the screensaver won’t show up.
The next task is keep your monitor awake during the video playback. Mouse Jiggler should care of this part as well or you may try Caffeine – it’s like Jiggler but simulates keystrokes instead of mouse movements.
There’s nothing to install or configure – just download and run Caffeine and your system will stay awake as long as you like. Double-click the Caffeine icon in the task bar and it will disable itself – all this without making any changes to your system register or power plan.
Related tip: How to Skip Trailers on DVDs
If you have too many apps running on your system, they are consuming system resources and some of them, especially the chat clients, may surprise you during playback with notifications. You can either right click-click in the task bar to selectively close these apps or get a utility like CloseAll that will automatically close all running applications with a click.
CloseAll closes all running apps by default (including itself) but you can also configure it to ignore certain applications by adding a simple exclusion list to the CloseAll.exe command line. Here’s an example:
CloseAll.exe -x="explorer.exe|firefox.exe|outlook.exe|dropbox.exe"
An excellent alternative to CloseAll is SmartClose – it will not only close all the running programs with a click but can also restore all these the programs once you are done watching the video.
It does this by capturing a snapshot of all the running process and services. If there’s a particular program or Windows Service that you would not like the utility to close, just add it to the protected list. The default settings are good enough though you can always choose the location where these system snapshots should be stored.
Finally, if you like watching videos while simultaneously working on other windows /tasks, check out Always on Top – this is again a free utility that will help you stick your media player window on top of other program windows. Launch the program, select the media player window and press Alt+Space bar to put it on top.

Find What’s Common Between Two Facebook User

If you are a friend of someone on Facebook, you can always visit their profile page to know what’s common between you and that user. You’ll get know about your mutual friends as well the various pages on Facebook that are liked by both of you.
facebook_friends
Facebook recently extended this idea with the launch of Friendship Pages. Now you get to explore photographs in which both of you are tagged, events that you may have attended together, and every single word that was ever exchanged between you and your friend on Facebook through wall posts, status updates or comments.
If the friendship pages are not enabled for your Facebook account yet, you may use the following URL:
http://www.facebook.com/Xuser?and=Yuser
Replace Xuser and Yuser with their respective Facebook Profile IDs (or vanity names).
Facebook says that you’ll be able to see a friendship page if you are friends with one of the people and have permission to view both people’s profiles. That means, you can also explore friendship pages of a friend and a non-friend.
friendship pages on FacebookTo give you an example, I am connected with Om Malik who in turn is a friend of Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook.
Therefore, my friendship page with Om will be available at facebook.com/AgarwalAmit?and=OmMalik while a URL like facebook.com/Sheryl?and=OmMalik will display list of Facebook friends and likes common to both Om and Sheryl.
Opting Out?
Friendship Pages on Facebook are not exactly a privacy nightmare but if you would still like to opt-out, here’s a way.
Go to Account -> Privacy Settings and click “View Settings” under the Basic Directory Information section. Set the visibility settings of “See my friend list” and “See my interests and other Pages” to “Friends Only” and now strangers, even with one-degree of separation, won’t be able to see your data through Friendship pages.

Browse the Web with your Email Address

webpages by email
Web2PDF is an extremely useful web based service that lets you browse the web using your email address.
Compose a new email message, type the URL of any web page in the body of that message and send it to submit@web2pdfconvert.com. The service will then fetch the corresponding web page on its own servers and will send it back it you as a PDF attachment – all this takes no more than a few seconds.
I have tried this service will several web pages, including ones that have complex layouts, and the conversion was more or less perfect in all cases (see examples here and here). The converted PDFs not only retain the layout but also the hyperlinks and thus you may fetch other internal pages as well using email itself.
Such a service may come handy in quite a few situations like when you have access to email but general web access is restricted. Or when you are surfing the web on an old mobile phone with a pathetic browser – in that case, the built-in PDF reader may be a better option for reading web articles.

How to Put your DVDs on YouTube?

If there’s a party happening at your home, you’ll probably capture the moment on a Flip video camera and then upload it straight to Facebook or YouTube so that all the other family members may also enjoy it. But things were a bit different few years ago.
Back then, you would shoot everything with an analog video camera on tapes and burn them on to DVDs. Therefore, in all these years, your high school reunion, your wedding video and dozens of other DVDs have piled up in the cupboard waiting to be seen.

Upload your DVDs to the Web

Well, if you got some time to spare over the weekend, you can put all those fond memories on to the web. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started:
Step 1: Get the video from DVD to your hard drive.
While HandBrake is one of the most popular tools for extracting videos from DVD images, I recommend VidCoder which is more like a simplified version of HandBrake.
vidcoder vs handbrake
Run VidCoder, insert the DVD disk and then choose the VIDEO_TS folder of your DVD drive as the Source in VidCoder.
Step 2: Let the conversion begin.
While you are in VidCoder, Press Ctrl + T or choose File –> Enque Multiple Titles and add all the titles to the queue for conversion.
The default conversion settings* are good enough for online video so we don’t really need to modify the Encoding part. Just hit the “Encode” button to start the conversion process. This might take some time depending upon your computer’s processing power as well the duration of the DVD video.
Step 3: Make it YouTube ready.
YouTube won’t accept videos that are longer than 15 minutes and we therefore need to split our DVD video clips into multiple smaller parts to fit the YouTube limit.
There’s a nice Windows-only utility called MP4Box that can help you here.
join and split DVD video
If you have two video clips of 20 minutes each and you split them at the 00:15:00 mark, you’ll actually end up with four clips – two of 15 minutes each while the other two of 5 minutes each. To prevent such a situation, a better solution would be that you first combine the two clips into one and then split them at 15 minutes.
Launch MP4Box GUI, click the Join tab and add all the DVD parts in the right sequence. Join them all and save the file. Next go to the Split tab, open the same “joined” file and choose “Split by Duration” – set the the value to 15. Split.
Step 4: Upload to YouTube (with resume)
We are now ready to put our videos to YouTube. The regular upload tool on YouTube works pretty well but I suggest using the Java based tool since it supports resumable video uploads.
youtube java upload
Click the “Upload Video” on YouTube, press the Shift button and select all the 15 minute long clips in one go. Take a break here because uploading will take time.
Step 5: Link the YouTube videos
Now that your entire DVD image is on YouTube but in parts, it’s important that you link all these parts so that people may enjoy them all in a sequence. This is possible through the video annotations feature of YouTube.
Open the first video clip in the YouTube Annotations editor, scroll to the end and insert a speech bubble that points to your second video clip. Repeat this with all the other clips.
Annotations involve a little effort so a good alternative is playlists. Put the all DVD parts in one YouTube playlist and then advantage here is that your friends can watch everything from one page without having to manually navigate through videos.
That’s it. Good luck!
[*] Unlike commercial DVDs that are copy protected, home DVDs are generally unprotected meaning your can easily rip them into other video formats without requiring any workarounds.

Download Check if the ISP is Limiting your Download Speed

You have a fairly good Internet connection at home and regular websites load pretty quickly in your browser. However, the speed seems to go down while you are watching videos on YouTube or are trying to download files through a torrent client.
If you observe such a speed pattern quite frequently, chances are that your ISP could be rate limiting your traffic for certain bandwidth intensive operations. To give you an example, if your regular download speed is 100 kB/s, YouTube videos could be streaming at a speed of 30 kB/s due to rate limiting by the ISP.
Is your ISP is limiting your download speeds?
glasnost test
You can run the Glasnost test in your browser to determine whether or not your ISP is following any such tactic to manipulate your download speeds for specific sites.
The test uses a Java applet to compare your regular download speed against the speed at which Flash videos get streamed to your system. Other than videos, it can also compare the download speed for email attachments (via POP and IMAP), normal HTTP based file transfers, torrents and binary downloads from Usenet servers.
You should consider running these tests at different times of the day since some ISPs may be limiting speeds only during peak hours. Also, do remember to stop any other downloads that might be running in the background for more accurate results.

Sharing Links Between your Desktop and Mobile

You have a bunch of websites open on your desktop browser that you would like to catch up later from your mobile phone. What are the best options other than emailing yourself?
desktop to mobileThere are generally two kinds of services that can help you transfer links from the desktop to a mobile browser.
The first set comprises of online bookmarking services like Del.icio.us or Google Bookmarks – you bookmark the pages, that you want to check later, from your desktop and then access them from any another device using the mobile website of the bookmarking service.
Then there are services like InstaPaper and Read it Later that go a step further – they don’t just save the address of a page but also the content so you may read the full web page on your mobile phone even in offline mode.
Now while the above mentioned services do solve our original problem, if you are looking for something more simple without all the extra weight and features, check out Kippt.
Just sign-up with your existing Twitter, Facebook or Google Account and add a little bookmarklet to your bookmarks toolbar. When you click this bookmarklet, it will instantly save the address of the current page to your online Kippt account that you may access from anywhere.
Web Links on Mobile Phone
Kippt’s website is minimal and perfectly optimized for mobile browsers. There’s a list of your links in reverse chronological order with a delete button and nothing more.
However what I love most about Kippt is their bookmarklet – it doesn’t bother you with any kind of notifications – click once and the page URL is saved. Give it a shot!

A Simple Way to Block Adult Sites from Kids

Kids Using Computer
If your tech-savvy kids are spending a fair amount of their computer time surfing the Internet, there’s a chance that they may sometimes accidentally stumble upon adult sites that you would definitely not like them to see.
Keep your Kids from Seeing Adult Content on the Web
It is nearly impossible for any parent to manually monitor their child’s entire computer session and what you therefore need is a solution that works in the background even while you aren’t around to watch over them.
There are couple of options. For instance, YouTube has a safety mode to block videos that aren’t appropriate for children. Then you have OpenDNS that you can configure with your router or computer to block an entire category of websites that contain violent or adult content.
There are some site blocking programs (NetNanny for example) that monitor your kid’s activity on the computer and will automatically restrict them from visiting sites that aren’t meant for them. Then you have the slightly-geeky 127.0.0.1 trick to that helps you block any of the known websites on your computer.
A More Straightforward Solution to Block Sites
If you are looking for a more simple solution to keep all adult sites off your computers, switch to FamilyShield as described in the following video:

FamilyShield is part of the previously described OpenDNS service but the advantage here is that you don’t have to do any tweaking to block adult content – just change your DNS server entries (these are different from the original OpenDNS values) and the web filters are immediately activated.
If you chose to setup FamilyShield on your router, sites that contain adult content will automatically get blocked on all your computers, gaming consoles and even mobile phones that are part of your home network. It even blocks proxy sites that are commonly used bypass the web filters.
Website Blocked
It can’t get easier than this and there’s no software to install though your kids are likely to encounter ads when a site they’re trying to visit gets blocked – that’s the business model of OpenDNS.
